MASAI RUSSELL MAKES HISTORY WITH WORLD RECORD IN 100-METER HURDLES

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND - Former Kentucky Wildcat Masai Russell made history at the Zurich Diamond League meet, setting a new world record in the women’s 100-meter hurdles.

Russell crossed the finish line in 12.09 seconds, breaking the previous world record of 12.12 seconds set by Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan in 2022. The mark also improved Russell’s own American record.

The performance came with no wind assistance, making the time even more impressive. Russell pulled away from Amusan during the race and continued to build her lead through the finish.

Russell’s record-setting run earned her USATF Athlete of the Week honors, marking her second time receiving the award in 2026. USATF recognized her for bettering both the world and American records in Zürich.

The former Wildcat has continued to establish herself as one of the best hurdlers in the world. Russell won Olympic gold in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and she now owns the fastest time ever recorded in the event.

Russell’s historic performance also comes after a strong stretch of racing this season. She has continued to compete at the highest level while chasing the world record, and she now has her sights set on even faster times.

For Kentucky fans, Russell’s latest accomplishment is another reminder of the impact she made in Lexington. She continues to represent the Wildcats on the international stage while making history in her professional career.
