INTERVIEW: Kentucky State Track & Field Head Coach Johnson - talks indoor success and outdoor goals.

The Stable interviewed Kentucky State Track & Field Head Coach Johnson to discuss indoor success and outdoor goals.
Following a strong showing at the SIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, head coach Ramon Johnson believes both squads are trending upward.
“I think that both the Men’s and Women’s teams had solid performances,” Coach Johnson said. “I am pleased with the outcomes, and I believe this is positive momentum going into our outdoor campaign.”
The Thorobreds produced 22 All-Conference performers, with two athletes hitting NCAA qualifying standards. Johnson said the results met his expectations.
“I have the pleasure of watching them train and develop daily,” he said. “It was just a matter of executing the game plan and they were effective in doing just that.”
While proud of every athlete, Johnson emphasized the collective effort. “There was not a single athlete that did not ‘lay it on the line’ for the Kentucky State University Track and Field Program,” he said.
Now, the focus shifts to outdoor season goals: conference titles for both teams, 10 NCAA qualifiers and a 3.5 team GPA.
“In a competitive conference like the SIAC, we have to evaluate our overall standing,” Coach Johnson said. “There are some areas that we need to work on… but we’re definitely heading in the right direction.”
Since taking over in 2022, Johnson has grown the roster from 17 athletes to 107, a sign of the program’s culture shift.
“The only team that can stop Kentucky State is Kentucky State,” he said. “We are our greatest strength and our most challenging weakness.”
If indoor success is any indication, outdoor season should be special. Say Breds!
