THOROBREDS OPEN SEASON WITH 41-14 STATEMENT WIN

WILBERFORCE, OH - Kentucky State opened the 2026 season in a big way Saturday, pulling away from Central State for a 41-14 road win at McPherson Stadium.

The Thorobreds found themselves down 14-3 early, but responded with 38 unanswered points to take control of the game.

KSU's offense finished with 472 total yards and showed balance on the ground and through the air. Jaun Gainous threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns, while Denim Johnson added 124 yards and a score.

Darius Cyprian led the receiving group with eight catches for 98 yards and a touchdown. Jaden Hale added 85 yards and a score, while Aiyon Carter made the biggest play of the day with a 48-yard touchdown catch.

The running game also played a major role. Kentucky State rushed for 190 yards, led by Tristan Thomas, who scored two touchdowns.

Defensively, the Thorobreds made key stops when it mattered. Carlos Bazert Jr. recorded two sacks, while Roman Hernandez came away with a fourth-quarter interception. KSU also held Central State scoreless in the second half.

After a slow start, Kentucky State showed its depth, effort and ability to respond. The Thorobreds controlled the second half and opened the season with plenty of momentum moving forward. PLAYER OF THE GAME: DARIUS CYPRIAN

Cyprian led the Thorobreds with 8 catches for 98 yards and a touchdown. He was a reliable target throughout the game and helped KSU keep the offense moving.
