NORSE SURVIVE DOG FIGHT IN ROCHESTER

ROCHESTER, MI - Northern Kentucky battled through a late-game dog fight, holding off Oakland 85-84 in the first round of the Horizon League Championship at the OU Credit Union O’rena. The Norse leaned on a balanced offense to get out with the win.

Donovan Oday led the way with 19 points, hitting big shots and keeping the team poised when the game was on the line. LJ Wells recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, doing “whatever it took to win,” as he described it after the game. Dan Gherezgher added 17 points, while Kael Robinson chipped in 14, showing Northern Kentucky’s depth and scoring balance.

Defensively, the Norse’s press defense disrupted Oakland’s offensive rhythm, forcing the Golden Grizzlies to use more of the shot clock and creating fast-break opportunities. Coach Darrin Horn emphasized discipline in the final minutes, praising his team for staying connected and focused while dealing with Oakland’s late surge, led by Brody Robinson’s 36 points.

Team chemistry and experience were on full display, as players encouraged one another and maintained poise throughout the tough finish. Horn also highlighted the value of veteran leadership and player retention, noting the importance of growth and championships over immediate opportunity.

With the win, Northern Kentucky advances to the second round to face #5 Green Bay.
