COLONELS SHOW PROMISE IN SEASON OPENER

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Eastern Kentucky Football opened the 2026 season on the road Saturday, falling to Western Carolina, 45-21, at E.J. Whitmire Stadium.

The Colonels came out strong and showed they could move the ball early. Quarterback Tyler Travers threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with several different receivers throughout the game.

Elijah Caldwell led EKU with six catches for 102 yards and a touchdown. Jarvis Hayes added five catches and a score, while Brayden Latham also found the end zone through the air.

EKU held a 14-10 lead at halftime after two long touchdown drives, but Western Carolina used a strong third quarter to take control of the game.

Defensively, the Colonels continued to battle throughout the night. EKU recorded 79 total tackles and two sacks, with Jeffrey Kinley leading the team with 12 tackles. The Colonels also finished with seven tackles for loss.

While the final score did not go EKU's way, the offense showed plenty of potential in its first game of the season. Travers and the passing attack gave the Colonels something to build on as they move forward.

The Colonels will now look to regroup and build on the positives from Saturday's opener as the season continues.
